The Passage à l’acte in Adolescence

A Failed Attempt to Produce a Subject
By Amal Hachet
English

The case of Eric, a seventeen-year-old teenager who has been charged with a homicide attempt on a fifty-year-old homeless male, shows the strong link between a violent passage à l’acte in adolescence and the failure of the identification with the father figure. Éric’s act occurred after a violent encounter with a man of brutal authority who ejected him from the building where he was taking refuge. It is equivalent to an act of parricide. Moreover, Éric’s act can be viewed as a failed attempt to produce a subject, since it reveals the dysfunction of a society that denies to some of its members the place of a subject by reducing them to a waste object.
