Navigating Mass Psychology: The Political Mythology of Trumpism

Civilisation and its Discontents?
By Chiara Bottici

This essay explores the fascist mass psychology, focusing on the libidinal tie that links fascist militants to their leaders. With the help of Adorno and feminist readings of the Freud’s mass-psychology, I will argue that the Trumpism relies precisely on that type of libidinal bond. After exploring the underlying political mythology of Donald Trump’s campaigns, the article concludes with some reflections on the impact of social media in fomenting a potentially fascist mass psychology and the means at our disposal to critically engage with them.
