The Stimming Body or the Beauty of Repetition
Psychic repetition, in psychoanalysis, is inevitable, but must be overcome in the form of signifiers in order to make the encounter with the Real assimilable. Through the example of stimming, we propose to draw a parallel between psychic and motor repetition which allows us to draw new analytical perspectives where the body, considered as a relay of signifiers, draws a creative repetition carried by joy and appeasement – a position which goes against a large number of analytical studies on stereotypies. To do this, we proposed an anonymous online form that people with autism and/or ADHD could complete in order to express their feelings and experiences. It thus emerges that the stimming body is a powerful body protecting the subject from collapse by engaging in conscious motor repetition which makes its encounter with the Real assimilable. Stimming should therefore not be considered as a compulsion to be eradicated, but as a protective impulse, an act of empowerment where the subject becomes again, through the senses, an actor in his fight against anxiety and collapse.
