From the Skin-Ego to “Feeling”. Understanding Online Encounters Based on Anzieu’s Work
This article analyses the frequent use of the word “feelings” by young adults in the context of online dating, particularly on Tinder. This analysis is based on interviews conducted as part of clinical research. It sheds light on the underlying psychological issues in the hypermodern social context. The analysis suggests that “feelings” may serve as a substitute for the physical contact lacking in online dating. This appears to be an attempt to recreate digital emotional and social bonds. Our research suggests that the concept of “feelings” corresponds to Anzieu’s eight functions of the Skin-Ego. In hypermodern societies, where loneliness is prevalent, young adults seek to establish a shared virtual psychic skin. For these individuals, this dynamic would provide security when forming a potential romantic relationship. “feelings” appears to be a coping mechanism for the challenges of contemporary relationships, providing a safe and protective space in which to connect with others.
